Students are recognized for their achievements in research and other scholarly activities during Student Achievement Week!  During this time, many will present their work publicly through a myriad of events -- everything from the Annual Print Sale, art exhibitions, and theater productions to a sciences and engineering poster symposium.

Chautauqua is the Theater Arts Department's long-running annual festival of performance by UCSC students.
Weekend 1: May 12-14 (A Story for the Girls, Everything Closes at Midnight, Men at Work, and What We Do)
Weekend 2: May 19-21 (Good Poetry, Blushing Violet, and Rubies of Mokarar) 
Weekend 3: May 26-28 (Masked, Self & Other, and A Particular Kind of Heaven) 

Parking is free in the Barn Lot, Mon-Fri after 5:00pm and on weekends
Tickets are only sold night-of at the theater ($3–$5; cash or Venmo)

"ZOOT SUIT" by Luis Valdez

This energetic musical drama written by Luis Valdez, a key figure in the Chicano Rights Movement, is inspired by the riots that followed the racial profiling and imprisonment without evidence of a group of Mexican-American men by the LAPD in 1942. Because of the penchant among those attacked for wearing extravagant, long cut “zoot” suits, the wave of incidents became known as the Zoot Suit Riots. "Zoot Suit" premiered at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles in 1978 to standing-room-only crowds and ran for a year before becoming the first play on Broadway written by a Chicano author. Earlier this year, Valdez created a new version of the play which opened at the Taper Forum to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Center Theatre Group. The revival was held over three times due to demand. UC Santa Cruz will be the first academic theater in the world to produce the new script. The production will be directed by UCSC faculty member and Luis’s son, Kinan Valdez.

Sammy Showcase

Over the past nine months, students from the UCSC Game Design BA, BS and MS programs have been working diligently on their capstone projects. This event marks the first time playable builds of every team’s game will be shown to the general public! In addition, a panel of industry professionals and alumni will be judging each game based on technical and artistic achievement, with the winners taking home a coveted Sammy Award at The Sammy Awards Show the following week.

Friends, family, and the general public are all welcome!

Spring Open Studios 2017 features student art work in a variety of media including: drawing, painting, print media, sculpture, intermedia, photography and electronic art. Come to the UCSC Art Department on Friday June 9th, 2017 to see the Art students' artworks! This event is free and open to the public. There is a $4 fee to park in the performing arts parking lot.

UC Santa Cruz's 43nd Annual Print Sale

UC Santa Cruz Elena Baskin Visual Arts Printmaking Studio, Room G-101

This annual event attracts people from all over campus and the greater Monterey Bay community. PrintMedia students get to sell their original artwork and the community gets to support budding artists while collecting beautiful art. Now that’s a win-win opportunity! Hundreds of original etchings, lithographs, woodcuts, digital prints, handmade books, and more will be on display and available for purchase at extremely reasonable prices. This is a unique opportunity to see and purchase high quality hand-made artwork, meet the artists and tour the exceptional art facilities at UCSC. Profits directly benefit the student artists and the UC Santa Cruz Printmaking Program. The sale can accept CASH & CHECKS ONLY (sorry, no credit cards). Friday parking attendants will be selling parking permits for $4 and Saturday parking is available using the self service kiosks.


10th Annual Undergraduate History Showcase

The History Department Undergraduate History Showcase is an annual event held each spring that recognizes the exceptional research being conducted by UC Santa Cruz history undergraduates. The showcase provides undergraduate students with a unique opportunity to share their research with a larger audience, as well as provides a forum for students, faculty, and the university community to engage in scholarly discussion. In addition, a UCSC history alumnus is invited each year to deliver a keynote address aimed at undergraduate research. The event is free and open to the public. 

Eighteenth Annual Literature Undergraduate Colloquium

The Eighteenth Annual Literature Undergraduate Colloquium is a day-long event showcasing and celebrating undergraduate academic work in the Literature Department. Students present their work--creative and analytical--to an audience including other students, faculty, family, and community members. The Literature Undergraduate Colloquium is an exciting event for all participants!

The annual “Celebrating the Humanities” event is an important opportunity to acknowledge undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty who have achieved special recognition, distinctions and honors over the course of the 2016-17 academic year. Highlights include the presentation of the Dizikes Faculty Teaching Award–which honors commitment to excellence in teaching and its transformative impact for undergraduate students, and the Humanities Undergraduate Research Awards (HUGRA) poster presentation showcasing excellence in undergraduate research projects.

Natural History Art Student Exhibit

A display of student art work that features scientific illustration using a variety of art styles. The works will be displayed over one week in the window galleries outside the Baskin Visual Arts courtyard. All are welcome to this free exhibit sponsored by the Norris Center for Natural History. There is a fee to park in the performing arts parking lot.

Oakes College Senior Showcase

The Senior Showcase will celebrate Oakes students who have completed or are in the process of completing a senior thesis or project in order to celebrate their academic accomplishments. This event will allow Oakes students to present their work to the Oakes community, share with other students what they have learned, and inspire other Oakes students to pursue a thesis or project. Priority will be given to theses/projects that encompass Oakes core values of social justice and diversity.

Phi Beta Kappa Induction Ceremony

Undergraduates who were recently elected to Phi Beta Kappa will be formally inducted into the PBK Honors Society at this event.  This year’s ceremony will recognize inductees from the graduating classes of summer 2016, fall 2016, winter 2017, and spring 2017.  Winners of the Phi Beta Kappa Graduate Scholarship will also be recognized.

Chancellor's and Steck Awards Presentation

Three senior theses/ projects from each of the five academic divisions are chosen each year, from the winners of the Deans' Awards, to receive Chancellor's Awards. This event recognizes those fifteen top research projects of the year. The Steck Award recognizes the most outstanding research project chosen from the fifteen Chancellor's Awardees, and is announced at this event.
