Scholarships

Strauss Scholarship
The Donald A. Strauss Scholarship Foundation allows students to pursue a public service project during their junior or senior year. The scholarship provides $15,000 for expenses of the public service project and for some tuition, fees, books, room and board. The Foundation will award scholarships to as many as 15 full-time students who have:
- Demonstrated an interest in public service
- Outstanding leadership potential
- Developed and can demonstrate effective communication skills
- The desire to "make a difference” in local, regional, national or international communities
- One or two years remaining until graduation
- A GPA in the upper 1/3 of their class
- Submitted an innovative, original, public service proposal
Earth Futures Senior Thesis
The Earth Futures Institute (EFI), a new entity designed to focus world attention on the existential question of Earth’s future on the time scale of decades to a million years. EFI will use the best science of today to develop “scenarios” for life on Earth on these time scales and use them to launch the first comprehensive, frank, and probing discussion of the ethics of the future.
We are pleased to announce that the Genomics Institute has contributed $5,000 to support a summer internship on an interdisciplinary topic involving the science of genomics. The Genomics Institute gift builds on previous support from PBSci, Arts, and The Humanities Institute, bringing the total number of available project opportunities to five. Interested students are encouraged to contct us.

Phi Beta Kappa 'Key into Public Service Scholarship'
The Phi Beta Kappa Society, a leading advocate for the value of arts and sciences eduation, invites online applications for the Key into Public Service Scholarship, which will award $5,000 undergraduate scholarships and a trip to D.C. for up to 20 rising sophomore, junior, and senior liberal arts and sciences students interested in public service careers. Students with majors in the arts, humanities, mathematics, natural sciences, or social sciences are encouraged to apply.
Characteristics of ideal recipients include intellectual curiosity, interdisciplinary breadth and depth of arts and sciences coursework, leadership propensity, and service to others. Students can visit https://PBK.org/

Truman Scholarship
The Truman Scholarship requires an endorsement from the UC Santa Cruz Faculty Advisor. It is recommended that applicants review the requirements and meet with the institutional advisor, Don Bard, before applying (see contact info below).
- U.S. Citizen
- University junior, 3.5 GPA
- Interest in public service, leadership, and public policy.
